What are Plumbing Supply Lines?

Has your plumber given you a list of plumbing supplies for you to find? Does the work require new plumbing supply lines? If you have no idea what to look for to fix the water supply, our online store has you covered. You can complete your shopping list with our extensive range of online products.

So, what is a water supply line? It is a small, flexible hose that transports water between an appliance and its shut off valve. You can find this hose attached to most plumbing fixtures in your home, including some of the following items:

→Washing machines
→Toilets
→Tapware
→Dishwashers
→Fridges with ice makers

The term “supply line” can also be used in the broader sense to describe any pipe that carries water from the source through your home. During your search for equipment, you may have discovered the gas supply hose. This attachment can look quite similar to a water hose; however, it is designed specifically to transport gas safely between devices. The gas hose can be found around your home in a number of places, including:

→BBQs
→Hot water systems
→Gas meters
→Ovens & Stovetops
→Rooftop HVAC units

Take a look at our range of plumbing supply lines here. We have a range of flexible water hose options as well as gas fittings.

How to turn off the water supply

If your toilet/washing machine/tap/dishwasher is leaking, you probably want to stop traffic as soon as possible so you don’t have a huge mess to mop up later. Get your plumber on the phone for help as soon as you can, but in the meantime, you can follow these simple steps to stop the flow of water to your appliance. This will buy you time before your plumber arrives.

→If the device is connected to a water supply hose, the hose will lead to a stop valve. On your toilet, the valve may look like this:

→You can stop the flow of water by twisting the handle clockwise.

→For washing machines, the valve may look like this:

→You can turn off the water supply for your washing machine by twisting the handle clockwise.

Please note that shutting off the valve for your appliances is only a temporary fix and if you do so, you will need to advise a plumber of your actions once they are on site. Call for assistance as soon as you notice a problem with your appliance. Only a licensed tradesman will use the correct plumbing supplies and expertise to fix a problem.

Turning off the water for your entire home

If you can’t find the stop valve for an individual appliance, you might choose to turn off the water in your entire home. This is a last measure if you have an urgent need to stop the water to a specific appliance. You will need to call a plumber for assistance so that you and your family can go back to showering and using the toilet as normal.

→Find the water meter outside your home.
→The main valve is usually located next to the meter.
→Turn the handle clockwise until it stops.

Please note that the valve should always be either completely open or completely closed. If you are unsure how to achieve this, contact a plumber. The amount of water flow should not be controlled with this valve (it needs to be either on or off, nowhere in between) and if you do have any changes you would like to make in your home you should contact a professional immediately.

How to turn off the gas supply

Every gas appliance has a shut-off valve connected to the supply line. You can turn off the gas for a specific appliance by twisting the handle clockwise. If you can’t find the valve or you’re having trouble turning the handle, you might choose to turn off the gas in your entire home. It is recommended that you contact a plumber if you are concerned about the gas flow in any of your appliances.

Turning off the gas for your entire home

Before your turn the gas supply on or off in your home, make sure all gas appliances are turned off.

→Find the gas meter outside your home.
→Turn off the gas by moving the valve into a horizontal position.
→To turn the gas on, move the valve into a vertical position (in line with the pipe).

Please note that if you are worried about the gas flow in your home you should contact your energy provider immediately for inspection and advice. For more information about using electricity and gas safely, take a look at this guide from the Australian Government.
