In case you're unaware, a compression fitting joins two pieces of tubing together, making a tight seal. Each compression fitting has a compression ring or ferrule, also known as an 'olive'. They are usually shaped like a ring with beveled edges. Today, olives compression fittings normally have either nylon, brass or copper olives, depending on the application. When the nut is tightened on the compression fitting, it exerts pressure on the olive and bites it onto the pipe. This creates a watertight and airtight seal. Compression fittings are ideal for use in high pressure situations, like hot and cold water lines.

What's the difference between the copper, brass and nylon olives in a compression fitting?
There are subtle differences between the various olives.
- · Copper olive compression fittings have either brass or copper olives. These are usu-ally a little smaller and thinner than nylon olives. Copper olive compressions are suitable for use with copper tubing for hot and cold water, and air lines.
- · Nylon olive compression fittings only have nylon olives. These are suitable for use with a kinko nut. Nylon olive compression fittings are used with nylon, poly, copper, aluminium and brass tubing. Nylon olives can't be used with hot water applications because the nylon will melt.
