What do toilet seat colours mean?

What are you saying when you choose a coloured addition for your loo? Find out now.

A Blue Loo

Rather than expressing sadness, or memories of the ocean, a blue toilet seat can have a greater meaning. In Australia, accessible toilet seats need to have at least a 30% contrast with the colour of the toilet. For visibility reasons, blue is a great choice for a contrasting colour.

In accessible toilets, you can also find grey and black seats. Blue is popular because of the greater contrast but it can look a bit outdated and has been surpassed by blue. Who knew?

Take a Black Seat

As we mentioned earlier, black used to be quite popular for accessible toilets. It is most likely to be found in commercial or public toilets. This is because it is easier for this colour to look clean and newer for longer. This is especially important when a toilet has been destined for a life of public rigour.

Grey is Ok

Just like the other toilet seat colours we’ve covered so far, the grey seat usually has another meaning. Most grey seats are designed for people with special needs or seniors. This means they come in different shapes and sizes that support people with extra requirements. Most grey seats have extra stability and can handle heavy duty use.

Of course, check the model before you buy one to find out the specifications.

A Wooden Veneer

Less of a colour and more of a texture, the wooden toilet seat will add a refined sense of class to your toilet. Who knew that visiting the loo could be so luxurious? Choose from a deep stain or a treated pine finish — either way you will be bringing a touch of nature to your porcelain seat.

Ivory is not White

Off white sounds less than appealing, but if you call it ivory — boom! It’s all class. A cream coloured seat will help soften your whole bathroom and will help with discolouration over time. Occasionally, people manage to stain their seat with the wrong cleaning products, or it might fade/scratch over time — ivory toilet seats are easier to keep looking fresh for longer.

Old Faithful White

Just because you want to express yourself with toilet seat colours, white doesn’t have to be taken off the list. It is very popular for a reason. A white seat is non-offensive and it won’t draw any attention to your toilet. It will blend into the base and help you hide your toilet when it isn't in use.
