What is a macerator pump?

What does a macerator pump do? The process of maceration involves reducing sewage solids into small pieces and moving them through the system with a pump.

How does a macerator pump work?

When a toilet is flushed, the contents are discharged into the macerator via a pipe. The contents are then reduced to a fine slurry by a rotating blade that shreds solids. The contents are expelled into the sewage pipe with the help of the pump which transports it through a tube at the top of the device.

The pump waste is then deposited in a septic tank, city sewage system, or soil stack.

Do macerators need electricity?

According to the team at Saniflo, all of their macerating products come with a plug and require an electrical connection. Many systems have a powerful 600W motor that needs electricity. Saniflo have stated that your pump needs 115volts.

How long do macerator pumps last?

Generally speaking, your macerating toilet should last for up to 15 years. This is the estimate for an average home with average toilet traffic. If you have a macerator in use in a commercial environment (with a lot of traffic) the estimate is closer to 5 years.

In any case, you will receive a warranty from the manufacturer which will cover you for the estimated lifetime of your pump.

Fixing Macerating Toilet Problems

How do I fix a problem with my macerator pump? You should always contact a professional plumber or tradesman to assess your pump. You can also contact the manufacturer for troubleshooting tips. How to Install a Macerator

While your macerating system will always come with an installation manual, we recommend only licensed trade professionals carry out installation works with the fitting of your unit. It can be a little complicated and you don't want to risk any mistakes that could damage your pump or block your toilet and void manufacture warranty if installed by non licensed persons.

Saniflo Macerator Noise

Is a macerator noisy? They are about as loud as a normal flushing toilet. There is a little bit of variation from pump to pump, but most are relatively quiet. There is a new line of pumps called ‘the silence range’ that emit 10 decibels less than other models. You can check how many decibels your pump emits in the product specifications.

If your macerator is making a lot of noise, there is a chance it has been installed incorrectly. To avoid sound vibrations from contact with the walls, tank, and piping, have a plumber install your pump according to the manufacturer instructions.
